The Bubblewrap waffle cone

We’ve all heard of waffles: classic waffles, Belgian waffles and my favourite, strawberries and nutella - but a bubble wrap waffle cone?
When Time Out featured a video of the latest eatery to open up in Chinatown, as you would expect, the queues for the new dessert were pretty long with an estimated 30-40 minutes waiting time.

But what exactly is Bubble wrap? It’s part of Hong Kong’s street snack culture and has been around since the 1950’s believe it or not.

The egg waffle was created as a way to use unwanted broken eggs which were obviously unsellable to shoppers. As a result, the people in markets decided to create an iron-machine with the shape of an egg, adding other ingredients to it such as milk and flour to create the ultimate egg waffle.
23-year-old Marketing student, Abdou Emite, from Vauxhall was amongst the curious - and patient - people that couldn't wait to get their hands on this beauty...
Before opening its premises in Wardour Street back in March, the egg puffs could be purchased at a pop-up stall in Berwick Street every Saturday.
How it works? The iron-machine is heated and a sweet, egg-rich batter is cooked on a hot a special frying pan with small round cells. Batter is added until the egg waffle maker is full. It then has to be flipped over the other side up to the point where bubbles are created.
Lifestyle blogger, Jaime Tung, 33, told the Evening Standard: “It's a popular Cantonese snack I used to have as a child while visiting my grandparents in Hong Kong, so it brought back some wonderful memories”.
Customers can choose whether they want their base plain, cocoa flavoured or Matcha, a fine powdered Chinese green tea.
A full list of some of their favourite fillings and toppings is available on their website http://www.bubblewrapwaffle.com

According to Cenlang Wu, business partner of Bubble wrap, “We all love food, especially fresh, homemade egg waffles. We would like to bring you the memorable street snack, redesigned with local ingredients. The first bite is crispy, then the softness inside will melt in your mouth…”
